"Photography records the gamut of feelings written on the human face, the beauty of the earth and skies that man has inherited, and the wealth and confusion man has created. It is a major force in explaining man to man."
- Edward Steichen

When I was younger, I developed a philosophy that it is our duty to leave our little corner of the world a little better than how we found it. For many years, I have struggled to decide how best to accomplish this broad task. Is it enough for me to be a good man? Is it enough to treat others with respect and kindness and hope that my kindness makes it easier for someone else to be kind as well?

It was around the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina's devastation to New Orleans that I decided that interpretation of my philosophy was not good enough. I needed to change everything I knew about where my life was going to take me. I found that I could accomplish this through the art of photojournalism.

Photojournalism is not about finding facts, but about searching for the truth. Photography is a way to give back to the world by capturing all of the important moments, not just documenting them. No matter how good or bad the situation, a photograph can transform apathy into empathy. It can be the force that changes the world. On that horrible anniversary, I decided that I was going to try to use the power of photography to make my little corner of the world a little better than how I found it.
